Breathworks was invited to attend the All Party Parliamentary Group Launch on Mindfulness in May; it was an exciting event and it felt as if we are part of a much wider project with massive scope to improve the lives of many people in the UK.
The meeting was chaired by MP Chris Ruane, who is the driving force behind mindfulness within the Houses of Parliament. He explained that 85 MPs had taken part in a mindfulness course (arranged by Oxford) and there were approximately 20 from House of Commons and House of Lords present at the meeting. Chris Ruane explained that he and his fellow politicians had felt personally the benefits of mindfulness, however, the aim of the group was to enquire in to how mindfulness can be part of life in the UK. They hope to prepare a report based on the outcomes of these meetings ahead of next general election this time next year. The meeting was chaired by Madeleine Bunting (journalist and mindfulness practioner).
The panel was made up of the following field experts, who gave compelling arguments and research results in to the benefits of mindfulness int heir field, which were warmly received:
Professor Willem Kuyken (Exeter University) - spoke about why is mindfulness coming to the fore now and the necessity for solid research-based evidence (RCTs)
Doctor Florian Ruths (Maudsley) - spoke about cost effectiveness and necessity to regulate training
Rebecca Remigio (Wales Probation) - powerful example of working with violent offenders, who had been able to control their violent actions due to the mindfulness training they had received and the cost benefits
Richard Burnett (Mindfulness in Schools) and four school children - the children gave wonderful examples of how mindfulness had helped them in their day-to-day lives
Roland Lamb (Designer/inventor) - spoke about mindfulness and creativity and how mindfulness can be effective in improving worker wellbeing through smarter systems within workplace institutions
Ruby Wax (Comedian/Mindfulness practioner) - talked about her experiences of mindfulness as only Ruby Wax can!
This was followed by an interesting Q+A and closed by co-chair Tracey Crouch, who appeared on Woman’s Hour that same week talking about her experience - http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b042jfw3
